Community Food Co-op of Utah Creates Easy Way to Give Back to the Community

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) November 17, 2011

The Community Food Co-op http://foodco-op.net, a Utah non-profit agency, has added a Donation Share to its monthly offering and at its Market Sales. Priced at just $ 10.00 each, the Donation Share allows Co-op members and patrons to donate fresh fruits and vegetables to Crossroads Urban Centers Emergency Food Pantry easily and conveniently.

The Donation Share is modeled after the popular Produce Share which is a regular feature in the Co-ops monthly program. Produce Shares deliver a large variety of fresh, quality fruits and vegetables to patrons for $ 10.00. A Produce Share always contains at least 5 varieties of fresh vegetables and 3 varieties of fresh fruit. For example, in November, people who ordered the Produce Share will receive: local apples, DAnjou pears, navel oranges, avocadoes, local mushrooms, red leaf lettuce, asparagus, carrots and celery. Donation Shares will create a steady source of fresh produce for Crossroads Urban Centers emergency food pantry. Having fresh produce, as well as dry and canned goods will greatly augment the diet of the people in the community that the pantry serves. Donors can order Donation Shares online at [https://foodco-op.net/user/login __title__ Community Food Co-op Order Page]. Theres no limit to the number of Donation Shares patrons can order.

Patrons can also purchase Donation Shares at the Co-ops weekly Market Sale, which is held every Monday, 3:30 6:30 p.m. at the organizations warehouse, 1726 S. 700 W. in Salt Lake City. The Market Sale is a open to the public and is an indoor, year-round sale that offers local food and fresh meat, produce and other staples at significant savings.

The Co-op is able to offer great food values to our members and patrons by combining the buying power of everyone who orders, said George Neckel, director of the Community Food Co-op. We will take this same buying power and put it to work for the disadvantaged in the community with the Donation Share.

Crossroads Urban Center delivers emergency food boxes and other goods and services to more than 75,000 people annually. Emergency food boxes contain enough food for 3 days. Crossroads provides a number of other services for the disadvantaged in the community.

The Donation Share is a great way for people to give back to the community, said Glenn Bailey, director of Crossroads Urban Center. People can make a real impact in the lives of people in the community easily and with as little as $ 10.00.

To order from the Co-ops monthly program, patrons order by the first Friday of the month online, via telephone, mail or in-person. Donation Shares will be delivered directly to Crossroads Urban Center. For everything else they order, patrons pick up the food on a Saturday morning later in the month at the distribution site of their choice. There are no limits to the orders, no monthly commitment and no limits to the number of people who can pick up at a distribution site. The Co-op accepts credit/debit cards online; debit/credit cards, checks and food stamps by mail; and cash, if paying in person at the organizations office.

There is no cost to become a member, but people are encouraged to donate at least $ 5.00 for their lifetime contribution when they become members. Members are encouraged to contribute 2 hours per month volunteering in the community and 2 hours per year volunteering with the Co-op.

There are pick-up locations all over the Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Summit and Tooele counties. Utahns who dont have convenient access to a team distribution site are encouraged to contact the Co-op about starting a new one in their area.

The Co-op also holds a year-round Market Sale every Monday, indoors at its warehouse. The warehouse is located at 1726 S. 700 W., Salt Lake City, UT. Market Sales and participation in the monthly program are open to the public.

Avon Breast Health Outreach Program Awards Grant for Breast Cancer Awareness Program to Womens Community Clinic

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 22, 2011

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program has awarded a $ 29,000 one-year grant to the Womens Community Clinic to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer to underserved and uninsured women in San Francisco with a focus on the Western Addition. It is the first year that the program has received funding from the Avon Foundation for Women to support its work on this important health issue.

The breast health outreach program at the Womens Community Clinic will educate San Francisco area women and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. The vital program will also help to expand the safety net for direct health services for African American women in the Western Addition.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United States, and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55. According to the American Cancer Society, 21,130 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in California this year and 4,230 lives will be lost. Nationwide, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death from breast cancer every 14 minutes. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of years of life lost for African American women in San Francisco. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. Programs such as the Womens Community Clinics Breast Health Outreach Program help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.

We are proud that the Avon Foundation for Women shares our mission and has chosen to support our program. With these funds we will be able to provide clinical breast exams and mammograms to 300 new clients and to provide breast health education to 1000 community members, says Ms. Carlina Hansen, Executive Director, Womens Community Clinic.

Since 1993, the Avon Foundation has awarded more than 1,425 grants to community-based breast health programs across the United States, including the Breast Health Outreach program at the Womens Community Clinic. These programs are dedicated to educating underserved women about breast cancer and linking them to early detection screening services.

The Avon Foundation for Women and Breast Cancer Crusade

The Avon Foundation for Women, an accredited 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1955 to improve the lives of women and today is the worlds largest corporate-affiliated philanthropy focused on issues that matter most to women. Avon philanthropy focuses its funding on breast cancer research and access to care, efforts to reduce domestic and gender violence, its women's environmental movement to nurture nature, and efforts to provide relief and recovery in times of major natural disasters and emergencies. Since the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade launched in 1992, Avon breast cancer programs in more than 50 countries have raised almost $ 700 million for research and advancing advance access to care, regardless of a persons ability to pay. In addition to receiving generous support from Avon Products, Inc., and its sale of Avon pink ribbon products, the Foundation raises funds through a variety of events and walks, such as the U.S. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series, which is the Foundations largest fund-raising source.

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program is administered by Cicatelli Associates Inc. to support community-based, non-profit breast health programs across the country. The Fund's National Advisory Board selected the Breast Health Outreach Program at Womens Community Clinic, as one of 125 new grant recipients nationwide in the 2010 cycle of Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund grants. These organizations were chosen based on their ability to effectively reach women, particularly minority, low-income, and older women, who are often medically underserved.
